A journey in a geography book

A distant city on a paper map.

Sometimes a first step towards a place happened without leaving home.

A route under one finger

A map printed in a geography book was more than a lesson for an exam. Looking for the name of a city, a finger might cross a river, a mountain and several tiny dots. Even when we knew little about those places, their names could stay with us. A thin line on paper could seem to invite a journey much farther than any trip we had actually planned.

The place behind the name

Every city fits into a few small letters on a map. The real place is larger and full of other people's everyday lives. It is easy to imagine a story from a distant name, but that imagined story is not the whole truth. Perhaps the beauty of an old geography book was that it stirred curiosity while reminding us how much remained to learn.

A listening ritual for today

Before playing “Panchi Nadiya Pawan Ke Jhonke”, choose a city on an old or new map whose name has stayed with you. Follow a line towards it with your eyes and write down one question about the place. Keep that question after the song ends. Learning about somewhere can begin with one small question.
