A small reminder of home

The little ring of old keys.

A little key can bring back a place whose lock has long since changed.

The sound left in a drawer

Find a little ring of old keys in a drawer and you may hear them before you look at them. Their faint metal clink might have passed unnoticed in the rush of ordinary days. Now each key raises a question: was it for a cupboard, a door, or a trunk that has gone elsewhere? The right answer does not always come back. Even so, its weight in your hand can suggest an old route through a familiar place.

After the lock changes

Homes change with time and new locks are fitted. Some keys stop being useful, yet throwing them away may take a while. They need not hold a grand secret. They may simply remind us that we once passed through that doorway every day. Every household is different. To one person such a thing is just clutter; to another it is a reason to pause and picture a place as it used to be.

A listening ritual for today

While listening to “Koi Fariyaad”, think of one small thing at home that is no longer in use. Look at it if it is nearby; otherwise remember its shape. Write down the name of one place connected with it, without trying to tell anyone's private story. Read that name when the song ends. Sometimes a memory needs only such a small address.
