A small mark of passing time
The last page of an old calendar.
Dates change, but the little things attached to them do not always leave at once.
A month coming off the wall
A calendar on the wall once kept the simplest account of a household. A milk bill, an exam date, the name of a relative coming to visit—important things could be pencilled into an empty square. At the end of the month, the page turned, but faint marks remained on the back. Perhaps that is why an old calendar can seem like more than a count of days gone by. It also held small errands that made up ordinary life.
What was never written down
Not every memory has a date. Sitting on the veranda for a while, meeting someone along the way, or finishing a conversation before the tea went cold—much of this never appeared on a calendar. Yet an old page may bring that season to mind. This is no claim that every household lived the same way. An ordinary piece of paper can simply give us a reason to reach towards a time we remember.
A listening ritual for today
Before playing “Jane Kahan Gaye Woh Din”, think of an old month in your own life. Write down one small thing connected with it, even if you cannot remember the exact day. Then listen to the song and tuck the note into a book. You do not have to bring a memory back completely; giving it a little space can be enough.
